“YOU’RE the piano instructor, are you not?” The Wehrmacht major with the ruddy skin around his cheekbones asked as he laid a meaty arm over her shoulder. “Play us a tune!”

Muriel laughed and ducked out from under his arm. Around her, his group cheered her on. “Okay,” she laughed, “just one song.”

She glanced at the clock on the mantle as she slid onto the stool. She still had forty minutes, but had not yet managed to secure an invitation. Her date had placed his in his coat pocket upon arrival. She just needed access to his coat.

She started playing a traditional German drinking song, Trinklied by Verdi, which her nanny had taught her years before. She accented the sharps, making it a very happy, uplifting song, a song meant to be sung by a jovial crowd standing around a piano at a party. The ploy worked, and soon half of the room sang the lyrics.

Thirty minutes later, she slipped off of the piano stool and handed the keys over to someone else. While the majority of the group stood around the piano and sang songs, she slipped out of the main hall and to the coat room.

The same teenaged girl who had taken their coats still stood behind the counter looking bored and rapidly tapping her fingers on the counter.

“Have you been here all night? This whole time?” Muriel asked in a friendly, conspiratorial tone.

“Yes.”

“Are you thirsty? I could bring you something.” Muriel guessed she was maybe thirteen.

The girl looked up at Muriel, her eyes betraying a different need. “No, but they won’t even give me a minute for the bathroom,” the girl replied, her voice pleading.

“Oh. Of course! I can watch things here for a minute if you want.”

The young girl’s eyes lit up. “That would be great.” She ducked out from under the counter. “I’ll be very quick.”

“Take your time. I have nowhere to be.”

As the girl dashed off, Muriel slipped into the coat room and ran her hand in and out of coat pockets until she felt a thick envelope. She pulled it out and smiled. Perfect.

As soon as the girl rushed back, uttering a sincere “Merci!”, Muriel walked casually outside and onto the back porch. Two floors up, it looked out onto the river. In the moonlight, she could see the shrubs and rocks below. She walked all the way to the corner of the porch and dropped the invitation to the ground below.

“Was machst du, Fräulein?” The friendly question came from right behind her.

What am I doing, indeed? Heart pounding, Muriel slowly spun around and faced her date, painting on as sincere a smile at seeing him as she could muster. In perfect French, she declared, “I love your German language. It sounds so vibrant. What did you just say? Say it again!”

His expression didn’t change. In thickly accented French, he said, “I asked what you are doing.”

Her smile felt shaky, but she forced herself to relax. “Oh. I was just getting some fresh air. It had gotten just a bit close in there with all you big, strong soldiers singing like that.
